Final Draft- Cool

Cool affects everyone differently. The typical answer “oh, cool is being yourself.” Cool could be considered an oxymoron because to be cool is being original or authentic but conforming to the same idea as everyone else. The whole idea that to be cool is to be different but. During informal research for class I discovered that being cool is conforming to the same idea. There were relentless guide to be “Cool” generally saying the same thing. What are people getting out of this whole thing? People are craving significance but for what? It is a strange paradox that cool is. Cool is a lifestyle that people adopt to feel significant. People change their physical and social style to achieve the significance.

Physical appearance: Tattoos/Pierced Body/Hair
Tattoos and pierced body have been an increasing form of identification. Guest speaker John Fanning came in to our school to talk about his tattoos that had spread from one arm across the chest and to the other. There are many elements to the tattoos. His artwork to him was a “Timeline” it first started with the first tattoo that he received. In his American culture there is no right of passage to become a man, so that first one represented to him that he has achieved manhood. Most men feel more significant to the world once the label of a man comes upon them. Piercing and tattoo work is permanent.

Hair may grow back, but it can be the largest part of self. Genetically almost everyone has different hair. Cutting it can change a view of a person. Anthony Synnot wrote The Body Social: Symbolism, Self, and Society. He writes that hair has become a gender issue; men and women have been ruled by society to have different hair in different places, and different lengths. Actress Natalie Portman had shaved her head; speculation from critics said she might be gay. She might have felt different, cool in a way; she is rebelling against social norms. Her significance was displayed all over the news, “Hey a popular girly girl cut her hair, if I do it I might just be cool to.” (Not actual quote)

Social Cues/Cool pose
Walking into a room of familiar faces, people put on a show to relate to the other person. The person must know what to say, the tempo of the speech, and the indication of a handshake. Erving Goffman wrote a book called The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. He has the idea that what we live is a performance, how we act around others is front stage. Goffman feels that we read the situation. Then act to match the other person. Personally I don’t feel that this performance is in bad faith it makes life peaceful.

In a New York Times article A Poverty of Mind by Orlando Patterson talks about the pose. It is being laid back and not worrying about life. An individual can be an African American and have the new hair and clothes, but people lose their social significance without the pose. The pose must look natural, as if it is something that comes out of the womb.


Opposing view:
The careful reporting of FRONTLINE introduced The Merchants of Cool, which is the point of view of the large corporations that sell to the merchants, which are adolescences. Later on in the archive shows a group of teens in Detroit waiting to see their favorite band Insane Clown Posse. The reporter asked who is the middle finger pointed at and one of the teen responds “It’s pointed to the mainstream.” The band is not associated with Mtv or any large financial company. These teens may not be mainstream cool but still have these same characteristics. The small group of teens that have not been fazed by corporations feel cool because they are a part of the minority. The band is a new thing to fallow that is rare. Being part of an original idea let’s these people have a genuine feeling making there own significance.

Self:
I have created significance for myself. I follow the idea of being different and conforming. I pose walking down the street; giving the look that I am confidant. I will comb my hands through my hair to the messy look. Everyday at school I read the social situation, walking down the hall I know who to hand shake, who to hung, the correct conversation. It all depends on my relationship with these people. Also some people give off the sigh that they do not what social reactions. My hair also plays a major role in my life; in 6th grade I let my hair grow out from a buzz cut. Many people liked the hair so I kept it, although it has changed in shape it’s the common length that the opposite sex was attracted to. I previously had a piercing that

Denouement:
People that achieve cool constantly put on new acts to get the feeling of being significant and wanted (cool). Guides tell people that they need a nice car, and a good-looking girlfriend. The only way to be cool is to be socially savvy, people want the acceptance by others and the feeling of being wanted to be around others. Cool is bound to change in the future. It is a fairly new concept. In history people respected leaders, not necessarily cool. It is bound to evolve from where it is now, another prophet of cool will be born some new item will be invented. Although there will always be a pose, some people will always rebel, there will be new form to permanently change the body to give the different and unique factor. Hair might need to glow in the future or maybe it will be metallic.

Magazines like teen vogue send out a new issue each month about the new style and trends. Not fallowing the trends can make people uncool. It seems unfair that cool is not about being you it is about what large companies say is cool. it is also a guide how to live your life. Tips to being heathy and skinny (like models) advice sections. In other words how to be cool?

i am sure that you have fashion magazines laying around and this paragraph my be similar to the one i wrote larche but i think it is helpful
There are many guide on the internet to be cool, although the largest and the most helpful guides today are fashion magazines. nylon and teen vogue are very popular among adolescence because it is a time in life where being cool is very important. this is almost a guide to teen life, they tell stories about struggle. that can sharpen social skills and help resolve drama. they are guides and we are merchants of cool.

i know that you had a short bit of opposing views but maybe expand on it and talk about how it contradicts it self

Rough Draft/ ideas on paper

Cool seems to a mental and physical. Many different aspects of being cool.

Our physical appearance plays a majors role in becoming cool. In a school period group’s whet out on the streets to finds answers about questions they had about cool. A man we meet wearing a leather jacket and some slacks with a cowboy hat; we asked him if he thought he was cool and he said “isn’t it obvious,” Right after lighting a cigar. The way that he is dressed is different than the current style. He is being the rebel to current style. Although he shows class, wearing a nice pair of loafers and quality slacks. Now that most of the world knows the affects of smoking when he lights the ciger he is basically showing off that he is dangerous which is cool.

The performance
Cool is a common idea. Large companies agree on a couple things. Nobody wears what they wear because it is natural. The whole idea of clothing is a performance, and to perform well you have to conform to what other people wear. At the same time it is imporat not to copy exactly what other people are wearing.

Tattoos/pircings
Guest speaker Principle john fanning of School of the future talked about the tattoos that he had revived over his lifetime. The pain that he went through was worth it he said

For most people getting a tattoo is getting a face change. There is a story behind everyone, guest speaker Director John Fanning has his arms covered in tattoos spanning across his chest. His speech branch off in many directions because there are many elements to obtaining a tattoo. When he was 16 he received his first tattoo, also living in Maine in a conservative family. It was not to make his family mad, he felt that he was interested in different things. when he received the first one it was among his band members and it was a right of passage for him. In america we assume that we become man and women at legal substance ages (18 & 21). There was also a part where he said the experience and the pain that you go through is a whole new thing. He also said that his tattoos are a time line for him because they were all done at different parts of his life. During happy times and before going through life threatening surgery.

I found that in this day not getting a tattoo is starting to look like an attempt not to be special. A couple decades ago in America tattoos only belong to the few. In the present so many individuals trying to be an individual are now categorizing them selfs into the people with tattoos making them seem less. Not having a tattoo may make yourself look pure and untouched. It is special thing to be in the present.

In the wikipedia page on tattoos opens up many other elements of possessing tattoo. Cultures much older than the one in America tattoos resembles a ranking in there culture or feats that a person has accomplished.

One of the sites that i found just by typing in how to be cool was this guide. the guide was mainly saying that to be cool you must not care what others think of you and express it so people know that you don't care. and there is a ratio of social to clingy, you have to be able to present yourself to people but not attach yourself to a as single person. you also need to know what to say don't say anything to personal or ask anything to personal. if they say they like to shop talk about what places and peoples styles. avoid saying things that end a conversation. posture is also key because if you hunched over and you have your head down and you talk quietly and nervously people are not going to be interested. you want to leave a good affect where if you see these people or person again they will be happy to see you.

i also found a guide to how to be cool in college it was about the same as the first guide that i found but i noticed that a key was to befriend the RA which is the supervisor of the dorms and by doing this i assume that they will be nice in return and if you are trying bring a girl back to your room they will not report it. the last RULE that was written was that you need to have game. you have to deliver pick-up lines smoothly and know how to get girls attention.
everyone one wants to be around people like this. there are the people that are lone wolfs but in college it is about being the person that is different but part of a group. groups are composed of different people with different skills there is the funny guy. the stoner. the classy guy that waltz's around in a robe. but they all fallow the rules above.

the article it titled GOT TO BE COOL TO BE BAD. they say that at 13 life starts to change you start to noticed a attraction to sex. and the obsession to be cool. the narrator in the article said that sometimes she had to be disrespectful to the teacher in order to look cool. How to be cool according to ask men
the major points to becoming cool are dress well, have a nice girlfriend( a good looking one), associate with cool people, be knowledgeable, be funny, and be mysterious. most of these i am familiar with although the part of being a guy who has a hot girl got my attention is being straight is cool. you can have all the other qualities but being gay sets you back on the list because they are the minority. there are the dumb jocks that are cool and there are the smart people too. normally the smart people are nerds and losers but the is a difference. these people back in school

HW 29 - Merchants of Cool

The clip of Merchants of Cool displayed many forms of manipulation. companies recruit freshman's to throw parties where they would hand out promotional kids. Sprite payed kids to go to a kick off party and they had famous hip hop artists that were new and hot and this made the teens feel cool. sprite also created online sites. MtV is just a commercial it shows teens all the new. sometimes there was not enough. had to keep up with teens because once everyone started find out a new movie the less it becomes cool it is the unknown that keeps cool flowing. MtV uses the mook it does not really exist but is it the part of MtV that is in your face. it is all about being authentic. And large companies try to find it an sell it, the more underground it is the more the teens want it and when MtV preposes the new whatever it is, everyone wants it.

One family member that i found really cool was my cousin Chris K. we were catching up since the last time that we chilled and he had gotten four tattoo and told me many stories of girls that he had slept with and how he is becoming a fireman. and told me wild stories of pledging in college. right now he is a mover for celebs and knows the ins and outs of california (were he lives). i thought he was cool because he was cocky and he almost seemed to control life.
